Laws for Bike Riders
Listed below are some of the State laws and City Ordinances governing the actions of bicycle drivers:
- Drive single file as close as practical to the right side of the road. Leave room for potholes, debris, glass, car doors, etc.
- Have at least one hand on the handlebars at all times.
- Passengers are allowed on a bicycle only if the bicycle is designed or equipped for it. (Tandem bicycle or child’s seat.)
- Use bicycle paths, lanes, and routes where provided.
- Only children 10 years of age or younger or deaf persons may drive on the sidewalk, unless the sidewalk is signed as a bicycle path.
- Bicycles may not be driven on a public playground or public school grounds.
- The bicycle must be equipped with a 2 inch red rear reflector and good working brakes.
- It is illegal to tow a coaster or similar vehicle while driving a bicycle on a roadway. You may however, use an approved bicycle trailer which would attach to the bicycle frame. (See City Ordinance 102-8(6))
- Have your bicycle under control at all times. Performing stunts and trick riding is prohibited in the roadway.
- Yield to pedestrians on the sidewalk, they have the right of way.
- Give an audible signal when passing a bicycle driver or pedestrian proceeding in the same direction, i.e., “bike on your left”.
- Your bicycle must be licensed. The license is free and can be applied for at any police district or library.
Safety Suggestions
- Be ready to stop or yield when approaching any intersection.
- Choose low-traffic routes whenever possible to avoid busy roads.
- Walk your bike across busy intersections, especially when making a left turn.
- Be courteous and considerate of drivers and pedestrians at all times.
- Watch for car doors opening into your path.
- Stay alert! Keep an eye on the road ahead and be ready for any sudden changes. Ride defensively!
