Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (MAIT)

The Milwaukee Area Investigative Team (MAIT) was created in 2016 to specifically address compliance with the requirements of 2013 WI. Act 348 as spelled out in WI. § 175.47.

Currently, 21 Milwaukee County and Waukesha County law enforcement agencies contribute resources to the investigative team. Six of those agencies are considered lead investigative agencies and provide supervision and oversight of investigations.

The goal of MAIT is to ensure public trust by conducting accurate, objective, transparent, timely and professional multijurisdictional investigations of major incidents, primarily officer involved critical incidents. Together, the team will maximize the availability and sharing of the latest technological equipment and investigative techniques. MAIT allows resources to consolidate and share the skills of the most experienced supervisors and investigators.

Wisconsin Statute § 175.47 requires that, in the event of the death of an individual as the result of an action or inaction by a law enforcement officer, the ensuing investigation must be conducted by an investigative team from an independent agency.

When the Milwaukee Police Department (MPD) serves as that independent agency, it provides a complete report to the prosecutor for review. If the prosecutor determines there is no basis for prosecution of the law enforcement officer, access to the report as required by § 175.47(5)(b) will be posted below.

The related investigative file and associated evidence will be made available to the public upon request in a redacted format under the Wisconsin Public Records Law (Wis. Stat. §§ 19.31-19.39). All records, including photos and videos, can be requested through the normal MPD Open Records process.
