Milwaukee Police Athletic League (MPAL)
The Milwaukee Police Athletic League (MPAL) brings a powerful initiative aimed at strengthening relationships between youth and law enforcement. After nearly two decades of absence, the program was relaunched in 2023 with a mission to create positive connections through engaging activities, mutual understanding, and meaningful dialogue.
MPAL has hosted monthly teen nights at community centers across Milwaukee. These events are designed to offer safe, constructive activities for youth while fostering open conversations with police officers. Each participating youth center tailors its programming, incorporating sports, STEM, art, and other creative activities that bring youth and police together.
The program is built on the belief that early intervention can help young people develop trust and positive attitudes toward law enforcement. By breaking down barriers and focusing on shared experiences, MPAL helps participants see officers not just as authority figures, but as individuals with similar struggles and goals.
MPAL is a collaborative effort involving the Milwaukee Police Department, United Neighborhood Centers of Milwaukee (UNCOM), and several community organizations. Together, they aim to offer youth alternatives to negative influences while encouraging open dialogue about the challenges faced by both law enforcement and the community.
One key aspect of MPAL is its focus on youth mentorship. Officers serve as coaches, role models, and advocates, building relationships that foster trust and mutual respect. Activities like robotics workshops and sports nights demonstrate how collaborative efforts can create lasting impact and a sense of safety.
This program is a step toward addressing youth violence and bridging divides, especially during the summer months when incidents often rise. While there’s no quick solution, MPAL provides the structure and opportunities for positive change, aiming to engage not just the youth involved in the current centers but eventually all young people across the city.
The Milwaukee Police Athletic League invites other youth organizations to join in this mission. Together, they can create a brighter future for Milwaukee’s youth.
