Fallen Heroes
On February 13, 1943, Lieutenant Albert Grosskopf responded to the scene of a two-alarm fire at an apartment complex in the downtown district.
He responded to the fifth fire in less than one week in a city ambulance and collapsed while overseeing the response of more than 50 police officers. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died of a heart attack.
Lieutenant Grosskopf served with the Milwaukee Police Department for over 26 years. His wife and child survived him.
